On schooling / Sobre l'escolarització

It's been one year since Aitana first started school. She started school for the first time in her life after Christmas holidays and not in September, due to personal reasons. In any case, it was a day we will never forget...

Ready for her first day
Sergi and I had had our issues regarding the topic of school. Basically, whether or not to school her before 6 (it is not compulsory to school children before 6 in Spain. Homeschooling is a choice, too, but not very widespread).
Once we decided to school her, we searched for the best place we could find. I even considered moving in order to be near of the rather few alternative learning environments that are located in València and Alacant. But the option of moving and leaving so many things behind didn't make much sense to us. We even started a project with some mothers, which didn't progress in the end.
So we decided to take her to a local, public school, near our home. The night before her first day, we could hardly sleep. We had told her what she might expect, we had previously introduced her to her teacher and some of her classmates and everything seemed to go well that morning. She got dressed, we all had breakfast and went to school with her. But, when she was at the door, she started saying she was sleepy and tired, and didn't want to walk in. We knew we had to leave her there, at the door, lining up next to her classmates, and leave. And that's what we did. She was crying, asking me not to leave, her teacher tried to calm her, she took her in her arms, and walk away with her.
I couldn't stop crying during that morning. The four hours she spent there felt like an unbearable eternity. What if she was crying the whole morning? "She will get used to it, I'm sure", said Sergi. "I know, but there's a difference between getting used and resigning to something", I said. Her teacher, Miss S, was kind enough to phone us to tell us that she had calmed down and that she was OK. Still, we didn't know what to do without her around. We put the TV on, as in an attempt to make time pass faster. We even went to the school gates and, without getting out of the car, we "spied" her during the break, while she was at the playground.

Last year's last day of school
When we finally went to pick her up, she looked at us with a look she had never had before. It wasn't resentment, nor anger. She just looked puzzled, as if asking for us to put some sense into what she had lived that morning.
And there was the afternoon, from 3.30 to 5 PM. What shall we do? Shall we take her to school? We decided that Sergi would take her to school. This time, she also cried a bit, but as soon as she lost sight of him, she calmed down.
The next morning there were two options: either she refused to go, or she willingly agreed to go. And it happened the second one. And, since then on, everything has gone quite all right thanks to Aitana and thanks to her caring teacher, who paid special attention to the way she was adapting to school. She is very kind to children, very calmed, patient and loving. When we have a meeting with her, to talk about Aitana, she always tells us about how Aitana feels, if she's happy, what she likes or doesn't like doing and not about her academic achievements (which for us, at this age, are secondary).
This year, her first day was very different
We are happy about our choice. It is a conventional school, with all the drawbacks it may have, especially when children are at primary school: timetables, exams, textbooks (not many, actually), worksheets, homework and so on. But, as I said before, this is the best school we could find for Aitana and, along with these drawbacks, there are many positive things that deserve to be highlighted. It is a project-based school. It is the only school in our city which has a garden where children grow vegetables and study the subject of Natural Sciences. It follows a constructive approach in order to teach children to read and write. Parents are invited to participate in many activities. And we do. And her face beams when she sees us appear in her class in order to read with them, to prepare the Christmas decoration or to do some face painting for Halloween.

Tot i això , no sabíem què fer sense ella.
I ho fem .

Frugal pastimes / Passatemps frugals

We've been a bit busy getting ill during the last 3 weeks. Aitana and Martí have been taking turns in getting a cold + high temperature + runny nose + cough + watery eyes + diarrhoea + soar throat. And this is how we have spent our time.

Making flowers with egg cartons and pipe cleaners.
Fent flors amb cartrons d'ous i neteja pipes.

Doing some bookmarks and learning about shapes, circles and fractions. If you like Ed Emberley's books, or would like to know about his Picture Pie books, I invite you to read what my blog-friend Joey has published over at this blog.
By the way, have you noticed that Aitana, in spite of being ill, never forgets about elegance and princessly manners? She likes wearing her Cinderella costume, or her Ralph Lauren dress (which she inherited from a cousin) even though she must stay at home wearing her pyjamas underneath. Isn't she trendy?

5 months old / Martí. 5 mesos

The days seem to pass very fast lately. My little angel is almost 5 months old and he's really conquered us all with his smile. I can't believe how he has changed and how many things he has learned. I love it when he plays with his feet. When he looks at me with his mouth wide open , as in wonder. I love to sing to him, because, from time to time, he joins in and starts making noises, as if singing along, hahahah! He has lately learned to roll over and stand on his belly and elbows. It's amazing to see how he draws all the will power to do it. Actually, the first time he did it, that night, he woke up at 3 o'clock in the middle of the night and couldn't go back to sleep. As soon as I put him back in bed to sleep, he rolled over and started making noises. I think he was soooo excited, he couldn't stop practicing. After 2 hours (not entirely devoted to rolling over, thanks God), he (and I) finally went back to sleep. I'm very happy because I know this is a milestone in his path towards crawling. Here's an interesting post on the unadvisable practises which difficult crawling.

Els dies me passen molt ràpid últimament.

On creativity / Sobre creativitat

The invitation.
La invitació

Aitana has a "travelling folder" at school which comes home with a proposal and goes back to school with whatever outcome it sparked. In this case, the folder contained the worksheet you can see in the photo (the lyrics of a popular song and a picture).
I thought my invitation would be appealing enough for Aitana to start creating something with the proposed materials displayed on the table.

The most appealing item for her was the mirror. She sat down immediately and, after asking it "Who's the fairest one of all?", she started... PAINTING THE WORKSHEET!!!
Sir Ken Robinson came immediately to my mind. Although I know that, what really matters is the process, and not the product, and although I believe that we are all creative, I must admit I got a bit disappointed, but I didn't force her to stop doing what she was into. When she finished I admired the colours she had chosen and how she had combined them.
A few days later, I read this book: Raising a Creative Kid: Simple Strategies for Igniting and Nurturing that Creative Spark, by Jillian Riley and I learned some key aspects of what creativity means.

To be continued...

Coping with a brother / Assimilant al germà

Soon after Christmas, and a month after Martí was born, Aitana received this present from our neighbours. They're a very kind family and I knew they had put much tought in this present.

We started playing with it immediately and, immediately as well, Aitana asked me to give the baby to the father (it was attached with a rubber band).
Some weeks later, Aitana asked for the baby to go back to his mum's arms. And last week, she asked me to give the baby to his sister.
She has been having a tough time coping with her brother's new arrival. She was sad because she missed me and she was also angry at him. We have tried our best to manage it, always acknowledging her feelings, helping her to find the words to express how she feels and trying to find "only mummy and Aitana moments" every day.

I've been reading this book Siblings without Rivalry: How to Help Your Children Live Together So You Can Live Too, by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Another one of their books, How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk, is one of our bibles on child rearing at home and the one on siblings is a very interesting one too. I hope to write some of the things I've learnt soon, but, meanwhile, you can have a look at this summary.
He estat llegint aquest llibre: Siblings without Rivalry: How to Help Your Children Live Together So You Can Live Too, de Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

This is the last post about our dolls' house (unless we manage to finish our garden / backyard). After showing you the bedroom and living room, and the kitchen; you'll now see the bathroom.

The sink is made with a paper clip and a contact lenses empty kit. The mirror frame is part of the plastic opening of a baby wipes package and a CD was used for the mirror itself. Tape has been one of my best allies in creating some of the furniture, as in the case of the toilet, made of egg carton. For the showerhead, I used the cap from a milk brick.

The thing I like most about the house is the fact that I have finally used some of the items I usually keep just in case I need them (TP rolls, egg cartons, rubber bands, bottle caps, etc.). Who knows? They can become art someday. And.. last but not least, my husband has finally acknowledged that they are not exactly trash and that I am not developing a Diogenes syndrome ;)

I'm sharing this project at madebyjoey

DIY dolls' house (part 2) / Casa de nines feta a mà (segona part)

Here is another of the rooms in our dolls' house. Aitana and I love playing with them. We have made some peg dolls to fit in the furniture and we're now making a garden/backyard.

This is our kitchen. A modest one, no microwave, no oven.

Aquesta és la nostra cuina. Modesta, sense microones, sense forn.

Here is a detail of the sink, made with a paper clip and a contact lenses empty kit. The cooker is made of velcro glued to the counter (cork from an old board)

The table is made of the top of a yoghurt pot and some bottle cap joined with tape. I used blu-tack to stick the leg to the table. The chairs are made with pieces an egg carton box. I sewed some cushions matching the fabric in the rest of the kitchen (very Italian-like, by the way).

For the fridge, I used the plastic opening of a baby wipes package. I printed the inside and the outside of it and glued them. It was quite difficult to find the perfect picture size to match the fridge door, especially because I wanted to be a vintage one.

Coming soon... the bathroom.
Pròximament... el bany.

Proud to appear at a former classmate's blog: madebyjoey: sharing creative ideas {all weekend}
