Keeping it real

I've written this message to all my classmates in the Karen Tyler's Montessori online course I'm taking. I thought it would be ok to post it here too:

I'd like to share this post and some thoughts with you http://thefreechild.blogspot.com/2012/03/real-magic-in-montessori.html
Sometimes, when I look at other mom's blogs and read about the wonderful things their children do, I feel overwhelmed because my daughter is not able to stay so focused in an activity, or doesn't want to do it, etc.
As the post says about how we may think there is magic behind a child, e.g., cleaning a table: "it is through no miracle, but through careful observation and preparation of the child before he is presented the activity.  And that is the information that most blog post lack,"

And she goes on saying:
"Looking at blogs, I was very impressed but most of all discouraged to see what these children could do.  I think this was mainly because I didn't know what was done before to prepare them to a certain task, since this information was never disclosed, or even mentioned."
"It is by reading M. Montessori herself that I finally understood that just following a certain blog or just trying out activities that seems ingenious was not going to guarantee any success "

And, finally, my favourite extract from the post:
"The goal of the work we are proposing to children, is not the successful completion of the task.  It is not to have them know and be able to perform all sorts of things.  That is just an added bonus, this is the mean by which the true goal is reached."
I don't know if you ever feel as I do. If so, I hope this post helps you too. We are on the right way, by taking this course. I am very lucky to be taking it. And, as far as I'm concerned, I'm going to start focusing on the bibliography about Montessori that I have, and all the information that this course (and the wonderful feedback of its members) are providing.

I segueix dient:

No sé si alguna vegada us heu sentit com jo.

Aitana: "Mum, come here, look!"

Me: "You have placed all the pegs along the border of the box"
Aitana: "Sí. Anem a veure si brillen"
Aitana: "Yes. Let's see if they glow"

If we want to preserve our children's natural interest towards exploring the world around them, we must let them know that their questions and enquiries are meaningful and have a value. This is the way to encourage lifelong learners.

Montessori giveaway

I've just discovered this blog in which this mum offers the chance to win a giveaway Montessori online course with Karen Tyler. I'll make use of the translator in order to have a more in-depth look at it. This mum is currently taking the above mentioned online course (she also won it on a giveaway), so I'm sure she's putting into practice what she is learning!

Montessori from the Start: Introduction.

The purpose of this post is to spark the light of your interest and introduce this book worth reading. Since it includes very useful and interesting information, it is quite difficult to summarize. That's why I will not summarize succeeding chapters, as I intended to do at first. Hope you enjoy this:

Maria Montessori asserted that the human being is born incomplete and that he/she spends the first twenty-four years of life constructing his/her own self. After years of study, she could state the importance of the five senses in this learning process, especially the relationship between the hand and the brain. Hence, it can be inferred that a learning approach focused on showing the children abstract ideas is not very in tune with the natural way in which they learn. Children need to touch, hold objects, discover and explore.
These are the four planes of development that she recognised in every children's progress towards self-formation:

-BIRTH TO AGE 6: Children in this period of time are naturally egocentric and self-centered both in action and in attitude. Having this is mind is very important in order not to bias or misunderstand what they do, and not to punish or condemn it.
Maria Montessori also observed that they go through different Sensitive Periods of interest in which they focus on a particular area of development (e. g. lining up things). Such devoted, single-minded dedication doesn't last long and disappears as abruptly as it started.
Finally, children have Absorvent Minds which, in spite of being incomplete and different from adults' minds, are capable of learning from contact with the environment through sensorial exploration.

-6-12 YEARS OLD: Now children switch focus from themselves into peers, from relating with the environment through their senses, to relating and getting along with others. Thus, the materials designed by Maria Montessori switch from those intended for individual use (the children interact with each other, talking freely and thus learning how to behave in a group) to those intended to collaborative use (students have to complete tasks by working together).
Furthermore, children at this stage begin to reason (on a child's level, of course). They become really interested in binomials such as real/unreal, fair/unfair, good/evil, etc. And not only are they so intellectually stronger in comparison to the previous period, but they are also more energetic and physically healthier.
Music and art materials are also a crucial element in the classroom/environment and they are available at all times.

- 12-18 YEARS OLD: Children at this period have exhausted all the chances to develop as a complete human being and a new order begins in the form of new psychological characteristics. This third plane seems to mirror the first one and we can observe some contradictions:
children must disintegrate their former construction as a child in order to make room for this new situation
they are psychologically stronger and, at the same time, they are very fragile and vulnerable (especially from 12 to 15 years old)
they undergo intense physical growth, are less strong and become self-centered again (as in years 0-3)
in spite of this and, at the same time, they need adults' devoted time and attention to comfort them, to be a model, to give them security, etc. But they won't rely on their parents as a first choice. They will choose other adult mentors instead.

- 18-24 YEARS OLD: As in the previous stage, this plane mirrors the second one because of its stability and intellectual expansion. At the end of it, the child is completely formed as a fulfilled, mature and responsible human being, ready to live wisely and play his/her part in the history of this world. Montessori called this individual task the child's "cosmic task".

Montessori from the Start

I've recently discovered Dr Maria Montessori and I must say that I am absorbed by her findings, philosophy, way of understanding childhood, deep concern for children, etc. I must also say that the way she understands how children develop is very much in tune with the way we are educating, nurturing and bringing up our daughter.
Yes, I am one of those moms who practices attachment parenting (before even knowing it was called like that). I am one of those moms who breastfeeds her daughter, not because of what paediatricians or doctors may say, but because I just ENJOY it. I am one of those moms who cosleeps with her baby, because I want to, and also for practical reasons (see breastfeeding).
And I love it when I read about someone who had such a devoted love of children like Dr Maria Montessori.
I recently bought this book: Montessori from the Start and I am fascinated by it. How can someone in the early 1900s be so right in the 21st century?
Soon, I am going to write another post on the first chapter in this book, so that you can have a broad idea about its content. In this way, I will oblige myself to sit down and do things, instead of getting lost in the theory jungle.
So, coming soon,... Introduction (a brief description of the Montessori approach and why it succeeded).

Recentment he descobert la Dra.

Maria Montessori.

Fa poc vaig comprar aquest llibre:
Montessori from the Start i estic fascinada.
